Where do I start?
Identify the barrier
What part of school is difficult to access because of your disability or health condition?
Find your office
Use the medical-school search tool on this page to locate your school's specific office.
Ask about the process
Ask what form, letter, or other information the office needs from you or your healthcare professional.
Gather documentation
Collect the records or provider letter they requested. It should explain what is difficult for you and what support may help.
Discuss options
You do not necessarily need to know the perfect accommodation beforehand. The process is collaborative.
Plan ahead
Some accommodations—especially clinical, technological, or scheduling—take time to arrange.

What accommodations are meant to do
Accommodations help remove disability-related barriers. They are not meant to lower the standards for becoming a physician.
You are still expected to learn the material and meet the essential academic and clinical requirements of your program. The accommodation gives you a fair way to access the curriculum and show what you know.
Accommodations provide access
The goal is to find a workable way for you to take part in medical school and meet the same essential expectations as other students.
- Each request is considered individually.
- An accommodation that works in a classroom may need to be adjusted for a lab, exam, or clinical rotation.
- The accessibility office may work with you and the program to find an option that addresses the barrier without removing an essential requirement.
What could an accommodation look like?
These are examples you can discuss with your accessibility office. What makes sense will depend on the barrier you are dealing with, the setting, and your program’s requirements.
Tests and exams
Extra time is only one possibility. Other examples include:
- Additional testing time
- Additional or more flexible breaks
- A reduced-distraction testing space
- A private or smaller testing room
- Adjustments to seating or the testing environment
- Permission for medically necessary food, water, medication, or medical equipment
- Accessible computer equipment or software
- Other modifications to make an examination accessible
Try describing what is hard under the usual testing setup and what change would help you access the exam.
Classes and learning spaces
Accommodations can also help with lectures, labs, small groups, and other learning activities. Examples include:
- Accessible seating or classroom locations
- Permission to stand, change position, or use ergonomic seating when needed
- Access to lecture materials in an accessible format
- Captioning or communication access
- Assistive listening technology
- Screen-reading, magnification, or other accessibility software
- Speech-to-text or other assistive technology
- Adjustments related to visual presentation or readability
- Note-taking or other approved academic-access supports
- Reasonable flexibility for disability-related medical appointments or episodic symptoms when permitted by the program
Breaks and health needs
Sometimes the main need is a way to manage a health condition during the school day. Examples include:
- Additional or disability-related breaks
- Access to medication during long educational activities
- Food or drink when medically necessary
- Restroom access
- Time to manage medical devices
- Ability to sit, stand, stretch, or reposition
- Appropriate opportunities to manage pain, fatigue, blood sugar, or other fluctuating symptoms
Technology and communication
Technology can remove a barrier without changing what you are expected to learn. Examples include:
- Screen readers
- Text-to-speech technology
- Speech-to-text or dictation
- Screen magnification
- Accessible digital materials
- Assistive listening systems
- Captioning
- Sign-language interpreters or other communication access when appropriate
- Alternative input devices or other adaptive technology
The exact tools available depend on the student, environment, institution, and educational activity.
Clinical rotations and clerkships
Accommodations can continue during third and fourth year. The details may change from one rotation to another. Examples include:
- Accessible clinical workspaces or equipment
- Seating or opportunities to sit when prolonged standing creates a disability-related barrier
- Assistive listening or communication technology
- Interpreting or captioning support where appropriate
- Adjustments involving mobility or physical access
- Disability-related breaks
- Appropriate scheduling modifications
- Adaptive equipment
- Other individualized modifications that allow a student to participate meaningfully in clinical education
The goal is to find an accessible way for you to meet the rotation’s essential learning and patient-care expectations.
Attendance, schedules, and changing symptoms
Some disabilities are not constant. Symptoms can flare, treatment can require appointments, and some conditions vary considerably from day to day.
Depending on the program and individual circumstances, a student may be able to discuss things such as disability-related attendance flexibility, scheduling adjustments, medical appointments, breaks, or modifications to how certain requirements are completed.
Medical education has requirements that cannot always be moved or missed, particularly during clinical training. Discuss these issues with your school's disability professional rather than assuming flexibility is impossible or that a particular modification is guaranteed.
Physical access and mobility
Examples that may improve physical access include:
- Accessible classrooms, laboratories, clinical spaces, and testing locations
- Accessible-height workspaces where appropriate
- Mobility-device access
- Adaptive or ergonomic equipment
- Modified positioning
- Other physical-access modifications
